Year 6 2026-2027

Welcome to Year 6!

A very warm welcome to Year 6!

We are delighted to begin this exciting final year of your child’s journey at Cop Lane C.E. Primary School. Year 6 is a very special year. As well as preparing the children for the transition to high school, we will be encouraging them to become increasingly independent, responsible and confident learners. We have lots of exciting learning planned and are looking forward to a busy and rewarding year together.

This term, our learning will be centred around the fascinating topic of World War 2, with a particular focus on how the war affected children and families in the North West. We will explore life on the Home Front, rationing, evacuation and how our local area changed during the war. We will also investigate Windermere and how land use has changed since World War 2.

This will all come together when we have our “World War 2” day in class in October. (More information to come)

Alongside this, the children will be developing their knowledge and skills across the full curriculum, including science, mathematics, English, computing, French, art, design technology, music, PE, RE and PSHE.

Your Year 6 Team

Class Teacher: Mrs Dugdale

Teaching Assistant: Mrs Parker – Monday to Thursday

Teaching Assistant: Mr Moss – Friday

Additional support: Mrs Teague and Mrs Turner will also work with the class on Friday afternoons delivering RE and Music

We are very lucky to have such a fantastic team supporting the children throughout their final year at Cop Lane.

P.E.

For this term, our PE sessions will take place on Monday and Thursday.

Children should come to school wearing their PE kit on both days. As some sessions may take place outdoors, children may wear tracksuit bottoms, their PE top, school jumper and suitable trainers.

This term, our PE learning will include hockey and basketball, followed by gymnastics and yoga.

We will also continue to take part in our Daily Mile.

Homework

As part of our preparation for high school, we will be encouraging children to take greater responsibility for their own learning.

Children will have one piece of homework each week. Homework will be given out on a Thursday and should be returned by the following Thursday.

Instructions will be stuck into the children’s homework books each week so that they know exactly what they need to complete.

We encourage children to take ownership of their homework, although we really appreciate parents and carers supporting them where needed.

Times Tables

Children should continue to use Times Tables Rock Stars (TTRS) regularly to consolidate and strengthen their times-table knowledge.

Quick, regular practice is much more effective than completing lots of practice in one go, so please encourage your child to spend a few minutes practising their tables regularly.

More website and signposting to other activities are available in the Home sections of the Year 6 page.

Reading

Daily reading at home remains extremely important in Year 6.

Please encourage your child to read regularly and talk to them about what they have read. Asking questions about characters, events, vocabulary and the author’s choices will help to develop their comprehension and deeper understanding of texts.

We will continue to promote reading for pleasure in school, and children are welcome to record any other books or texts they enjoy reading at home in their reading record.

Children should bring their reading book and reading record to school every day.

We visit the school library every Friday, giving children the opportunity to choose from a wide range of books.

If your child would like to change their library book, please ensure that their current book is returned to school on Thursday, ready for our Friday library visit.

What are we learning this term?

Our main topic this term is:

World War 2

History:
We will explore World War 2 through the experiences of children, particularly focusing on:

  • How did World War 2 impact children in the North West?
  • What was life like for children during the war?
  • How did evacuation, rationing and air raids affect families?

Geography:
We will investigate Windermere and consider:

  • How and why has land use changed since World War 2?
  • What similarities and differences can we identify between places?

English:
Our English learning will be inspired by a range of exciting texts, including The Nowhere Emporium, When the Sky Falls and The Final Year. We will develop our reading, writing, vocabulary, grammar and comprehension skills through these texts.

Science:
We will study Living Things and Their Habitats, including classification and the similarities and differences between living things. We will also learn about the human circulatory system, including the heart, blood vessels and blood, as well as how diet, exercise and lifestyle affect our bodies.

Art:
We will create artwork inspired by Blitz landscapes, using collage and drawing techniques.

Design Technology:
We will explore textiles, including making, repairing and creating Christmas decorations.

Computing:
We will learn about computing systems and networks, create web pages and develop our understanding of staying safe online.

French:
We will develop our phonics, practise regular verbs and build our vocabulary, including mathematical operations.

RE:
We will explore why the Exodus is a significant event in Jewish and Christian history and learn about how Christians prepare for Advent.

PSHE:
Our learning will include road safety, dental hygiene, debt awareness, wellbeing and preparing for the transition to high school.

We are incredibly excited about the year ahead and all the opportunities Year 6 will bring. We look forward to working closely with you and supporting your children to have a happy, successful and memorable final year at Cop Lane C.E. Primary School.

Here’s to a fantastic Year 6!
