Year 5

Y5 Autumn Curriculum Overview

Year 5 2025-2026
  September 2025
Welcome to Y5!
We are excited to welcome you all back to school to begin our Year 5 learning journey. We have lots of fantastic learning ahead; our topics this year are Space, Greek Myths and Amazon Adventure.
In Year 5 the children will have the amazing opportunity to learn to play the ukulele. These lessons take place on a Friday, and it is important that children bring their ukuleles back in to school each Friday for the lesson.
Year 5 team:
Class Teacher: Mrs Hodgson
Teaching assistant: Mrs Newton
Class Governors: Mr Webster and Miss Palmer
Other Information:
On Tuesday mornings, Mrs Teague will be teaching the class with Mrs Newton.
Each Friday afternoon we will be learning to play the ukulele with Mr Norton. We will bring our ukulele home each week to practise but must remember to bring it into school every Friday.
Uniform:
As per our uniform policy, no jewellery other than small stud earrings should be worn to school. Long hair must be tied back, and no make-up should be worn.
PE
Our PE days for the autumn term are Monday and Wednesday. Children will need to come to school in their PE kits and will return home in these at the end of the day. As we will be aiming to do PE outside, on colder days, children may wear plain tracksuit bottoms, school PE top and a school jumper/cardigan. Trainers can also be worn to school on PE days.
For health and safety reasons jewellery including earrings should not be worn for PE lessons. Children who wear earrings need to take them out for PE and should bring a small purse or container into school to keep them in. Alternatively, children may bring plasters from home to tape their ears.
Medical:
Please ensure your child always has their inhaler in school.
Homework
In class, we will be focusing on a different set of spellings on a fortnightly basis (set on a Monday).
The children will bring spellings home to practice and they will also be shared on Seesaw. The focus remains on children using and applying spellings correctly in their own writing rather than learning them for a test.
Reading:
Daily reading at home remains important in Year 5. Please continue to question and discuss the text with your child to develop their understanding and comprehension skills. We will continue to promote reading for pleasure so please note any other texts your child is reading in their reading record. Reading books will be changed whenever children need a new book. We do ask that children bring their reading book and record to school each day.
Year 5 visit the school library once a week each Friday. To help us with the book change, if your child wants to change their book, please could they return them by Thursday.
Times Tables:
Children should continue to use Times Table Rock Stars to practise and consolidate their times table knowledge throughout Year 5.
Thank you for all of the continued support at home to help children achieve and continue to be ‘Simply the Best!’
