English
This term, our English work will be closely linked to our history topic on the Anglo-Saxons. Children will explore a range of high-quality texts, including myths and legends such as Beowulf, as well as non-fiction writing linked to historical events. Pupils will develop their skills in reading comprehension, grammar, punctuation and spelling, while planning and writing their own narratives, reports and poetry.
Mathematics
In Maths, children will continue following the White Rose programme. During the Spring Term, we will focus on:
- Multiplication and division (including times tables)
- Place value and number work
- Fractions and decimals
- Measurement, including money and time
A strong emphasis will be placed on fluency, reasoning and problem-solving, with regular opportunities to practise mental maths skills.
Year 4 Multiplication Tables Check (MTC)
Later in the year, all Year 4 pupils will take part in the Multiplication Tables Check (MTC), a national statutory assessment. The check assesses children’s rapid recall of multiplication facts up to 12 × 12. We will be preparing for this regularly in class through games, practice activities and focused sessions. Support at home with times tables practice is extremely valuable and greatly appreciated.
History
Our main topic this term is the Anglo-Saxons. Children will learn who the Anglo-Saxons were, when they lived, and why they came to Britain. A key enquiry question will guide our learning:
How did the Anglo-Saxons deal with crime, and can we still see their ideas today?
Pupils will develop their understanding of chronology, placing historical events in order and using appropriate historical vocabulary.
Geography
In Geography, children will explore water and where it comes from. They will learn about rivers, the water cycle and the importance of water to both people and the environment, making links to their own lives and the wider world.
Physical Education (PE)
PE will take place on:
- Wednesday – Swimming – Please ensure all children come to school with their swimming kit on Wednesdays.
- Thursday – Hockey, moving on to Golf later in the term
Please ensure children come to school prepared with the correct PE kit on these days.
Reading Books
Daily reading continues to be a key focus. Reading books are changed every day, as and when needed, and children are responsible for placing their book in the class basket each morning. Regular reading at home makes a huge difference to confidence and progress, so thank you for your continued support.
We are looking forward to a positive and productive Spring Term in Year 4. Thank you, as always, for your continued support with reading, homework and learning at home.
