Year 2

Year 2 Overview 2025-2026

Welcome to Year 2!
A warm welcome back to school this September and we’re excited to begin our journey of Year 2. We have lots of wonderful learning taking place this year, with our Curriculum Focus for each term being The Great Fire of London, The Farm Shop and The Seaside. Please see attached the Year 2 Curriculum Overview which provides further information for our learning in the Autumn Term.
Year 2 is taught by Miss Hynes with the support of Mrs Andersen, our amazing Teaching Assistant. On Thursday afternoons, the class will be taught by Mr Ashmore.
Our class governors are Reverend Nelson and Miss Parekh.
Key Information:
PE
Our PE days this year are Mondays and Fridays, your child should be in the correct PE uniform and earrings need to be taken out, or your child should come in with plasters covering the earrings.
Reading
Reading continues to be very important in Year 2 as the children grow in confidence and fluency. Please read with your child daily, ensuring to discuss the book with them and instilling a love for reading. We encourage reading books to be in school EVERY DAY and we aim to change them every MONDAY.
Phonics
The children will be continuing their learning with Supersonic Phonic Friends, however, in Year 2 the children begin to focus on Suze’s Spelling Rules, adding prefixes and suffixes, adding endings to words such as plurals, ing, ed, er and compound words. They will also learn some further rarer choose to use spellings. The children will focus on the Year 2 Common Exception Words list which are important spellings that children need to know by the end of Year 2.
Homework
The Supersonic Phonic Friends Spelling rules newsletter will be sent through Seesaw. This may not be weekly and will depend on how confident the children are with the spelling rules and if longer is needed to embed their understanding. For other subjects, the children may be sent home with further learning opportunities that link with our topics or if extra support is needed.
Thank you for your continued support and I look forward to supporting you and your child through their Year 2 journey!
Miss Hynes and Mrs Andersen.
