Year 1

A warm welcome to Year 1

We are so excited to welcome you all to Year 1.

Our Year 1 team consists of:

Class Teacher: Mrs Bell

Teaching Assistant: Miss Huke

Class Governors: Rev Nelson and Miss. Parekh.

Welcome back to the Summer term in Year 1. Can you believe it; this is your child’s final term in Year 1! Your child has settled into the new Year 1 routine and has been eased into having a more formal learning environment with increased focused tasks. Your child shall continue to learn through structured continuous provision activities, alongside being involved in exciting topics, to remain a motivated, enthused and eager learner. Looking ahead to Year 2, a great focus this term for Year 1, shall be independence and persistence, when approached with new learning challenges.

We love to share with our families the wonderful work that the children produce, and this is done through SeeSaw. Please see the attached curriculum overview for more details about our learning in the Summer term, and progression of learning throughout the year.

Key Information
*At Cop Lane we operate an ‘open door’ policy and believe it is hugely important, and beneficial to the children, to have good communication between school and home. If you have any queries about your child’s progress, then please do not hesitate to contact the school office so that an appointment can be arranged to speak with one of the Year 1 team.

*Our P.E. days this half term are Wednesdays and Fridays. Children will therefore need to wear their P.E. kits to school on Wednesdays and Fridays up until the next half term. If your child requires an inhaler, then please send in a spare inhaler for us to keep in class.

*At Cop Lane, we love to learn outdoors whatever the weather! It would be really helpful if each child could bring in a pair of wellies to enable them to stay warm and dry whilst taking part in their outdoor learning.

Phonics Screening Check 2025
All the information you need to know, regarding the phonics screening check is below. You have already received the letter attached, however if you have further queries, please do not hesitate to come and speak to a member of the Year 1 team. Please remember to encourage your child to play on the website links below under the ‘learning at home tab’, to assist them with their segmenting and blending skills.

Phonics Screening Check Information 2025

Phonics
Supersonic Phonic Friends is the scheme used to teach phonics at Cop Lane. Phonics is the primary method used to teach children to read and write. Every child in Year 1 joins in with a fun, active and engaging daily phonics session teaching systematic synthetic phonics. Phonics allows children to learn the letter sounds in a clearly defined sequence with increasing difficulty.

Reading
Your child will continue to participate in Guided Reading sessions each week and it is hoped that they will be heard to read individually at least once a week either by Mrs Bell or Miss Huke. Your child will also have lots of opportunities to read and enjoy books independently, throughout their week at school and continue to change their Library books every Friday. Please encourage your child to read for about 10 minutes each night at home, daily practice is better than reading a whole book in one go. When you listen to your child read, please comment and sign their reading record book, as this provides us with the information we need to effectively assess your child’s reading. Please note, that reading books will be changed every Monday and Thursday, so if your child has finished their book before Monday or Thursday, we would encourage them to read their own books or library books to gain wider reading experience. These books can also be recorded and commented on in your child’s reading record book.

Maths
At Cop Lane, we use the White Rose Maths scheme, this approach to teaching means all children have the same opportunities to learn and the support they need to fully grasp concepts. Teaching is based on the use of Concrete, Pictorial, Abstract (CPA) approach. This system of learning uses physical and visual aids to build a child’s understanding of abstract topics. Pupils are introduced to a new mathematical concept through the use of concrete resources. Pictorial is the “seeing” stage. Here, visual representations of concrete objects are used to model problems. This stage encourages children to make a mental connection between the physical object they just handled and the abstract pictures, diagrams or models that represent the objects from the problem. Children move between Pictorial and Abstract approach through scaffolding and challenging examples. As a result, children benefit from improved learning retention and develop mathematical understanding, reasoning and problem-solving abilities that will stay with them for life.

We hope that your child enjoys the new challenges and approaches to learning that Year 1 has to offer!

Thank you for all your continued support,

Mrs Bell and Miss Huke
