Autumn Curriculum Map 2025-2026
A warm welcome to Year 1
We are so excited to welcome you all to Year 1.
Year 1 is taught by Mrs Bell, supported by our fantastic teaching assistant, Miss Binks. On Thursday afternoons, the class will be taught by Mrs Teague.
Our class governors are Mrs Cookson and Mrs Webster.
Learning in Year 1 continues from the wonderful learning that took place in Reception, with the learning environment designed to build upon skills learnt in Reception. As the children move from Reception into Year 1, their school day will begin to follow a more formal routine. The Year 1 curriculum introduces new subjects and learning opportunities, with a greater focus on whole-class teaching and more structured tasks. However, to support this transition, the children will continue to access continuous provision alongside their formal learning. This allows them to explore, investigate and consolidate their understanding through play-based and practical activities, which enhance teaching and learning.
We will continue to encourage every child to be the best ‘Cop Lane Learner’, developing independence, resilience and a love of learning as they progress through Year 1.
We love to share with our families the wonderful work that the children produce and this is done through SeeSaw. Please see the attached curriculum overview for more details about our learning in the Autumn term and progression of learning throughout the year.
Key Information
*At Cop Lane we operate an ‘open door’ policy and believe it is hugely important, and beneficial to the children, to have good communication between school and home. If you have any queries about your child’s progress, then please do not hesitate to contact the school office so that an appointment can be arranged to speak with one of the Year 1 team.
*Our P.E. days this half term are Tuesdays and Fridays. Children will therefore need to wear their PE kits to school on Tuesdays and Fridays up until the half-term holidays. If your child requires an inhaler, then please send in a spare inhaler for us to keep in class.
*At Cop Lane, we love to learn outdoors whatever the weather! It would be really helpful if each child could bring in a pair of labelled wellies to enable them to stay warm and dry whilst taking part in their outdoor learning.
Phonics
Supersonic Phonic Friends is the scheme used to teach phonics at Cop Lane. Phonics is the primary method used to teach children to read and write. Every child in Year 1 joins in with a fun, active and engaging daily phonics session teaching systematic synthetic phonics. Phonics allows children to learn the letter sounds in a clearly defined sequence with increasing difficulty.
Reading
Your child will continue to participate in Guided Reading sessions each week and it is hoped that they will be heard to read individually at least once a week either by Mrs Bell or Mrs Ashby. Your child will also have lots of opportunities to read and enjoy books independently, throughout their week at school and continue to change their Library books every Friday. Please ensure your child brings their library book in on a Thursday, ready for a new book on Friday. Please encourage your child to read for about 10 minutes each night at home, daily practice is better than reading a whole book in one go. When you listen to your child read, please comment and sign their reading record book, as this provides us with the information we need to effectively assess your child’s reading. Please note, that reading books will be changed every Monday and Thursday, so if your child has finished their book before Monday or Thursday, we would encourage them to read their own books or library books to gain wider reading experience. These books can also be recorded and commented on in your child’s reading record book.
Maths
At Cop Lane, we use the White Rose Maths scheme, this approach to teaching means all children have the same opportunities to learn and the support they need to fully grasp concepts. Teaching is based on the use of Concrete, Pictorial, Abstract (CPA) approach. This system of learning uses physical and visual aids to build a child’s understanding of abstract topics. Pupils are introduced to a new mathematical concept through the use of concrete resources. Pictorial is the “seeing” stage. Here, visual representations of concrete objects are used to model problems. This stage encourages children to make a mental connection between the physical object they just handled and the abstract pictures, diagrams or models that represent the objects from the problem. Children move between Pictorial and Abstract approach through scaffolding and challenging examples. As a result, children benefit from improved learning retention and develop mathematical understanding, reasoning and problem-solving abilities that will stay with them for life.
We hope that your child enjoys the new challenges and approaches to learning
that Year 1 has to offer!
Thank you for all your continued support,
Mrs. Bell and Miss. Binks
